Ming's smear campaign

It fills me with pride to see British politicians marking the peaceful transfer of power with honour and dignity. The standing ovation was lovely. Ian Paisley found something nice to say. That was nice. But the leader of the Liberal Democrats took the spirit of the day, surely, too far.

It was a quiet moment on Sky News. Sir Menzies Campbell, filling in after Gordon Brown's speech outside No. 10, reminded viewers that Harold Wilson, then aged 60, was the last Prime Minister to give up the job at the height of his powers. Of course, continued 66-year-old Sir Menzies, we now know that Wilson was worried about developing the early signs of dementia. There was then silence and Sir Menzies stared uncomfortably at the camera, looking confused.

Stuck at 12% in the polls? Launch a subtle smear campaign against yourself. Brilliant.

Latest rumour: Quentin Davies is going to get the job as Equalities Minister. No, not really.

There is talk of John Bercow at International Development and - what a coup! - the late Chris Patten as Foreign Secretary.

Believe either when you see it, of course; but, I ask you, Chris Patten? Talk about Explanatory Note For Younger Readers. And what would it actually say, anyway?

I'd heard Bercow was going to jump ship... but there we go. Ah Ming.

My blog is a bit rubbish (well, I have a secret blog which is a bit better but have a look at my out of the closet one for now)

Hope you are well, Neill.

The reunion of the Spice Girls has coincided with the departure from Cabinet of Margaret Beckett, Patricia Hewitt, Tessa Jowell, Valerie Amos and Hilary Armstrong. I suggest that they now take a leaf out of the Spice Girls' book, record an album or two, make a film or two, and take to the road on tour.

So, of these five, which should be designated Posh, which Ginger, which Baby, which Sporty, and which Scary? And why?

This joke was tired in the 90s.

This is my blog. Any tangential drivel will be inspired or created by me.

If you want to think about the Spice Girls, or indeed ex-ministers, please do it in the privacy of your home, well away from any bay windows

That is all.

So were the five of them: I've known one of them for more than 20 years, and she certainly was. Anyway, the Spice Girls are back now. What next from the Nineties, one wonders in trepidation? That should bring us back on topic, even if not necessarily in a good way.

I know that this is all tangential, but what else is there to say? Reshuffles are seldom thrilling (would we want them to be?), but honestly, after all that we were promised or threatened with, this one is in a class of its own for dullness.

The "All The Talents" business has turned out to be nothing more than Brown offering Shirley Williams some advisorship that it isn't even clear that she's accepted. Is this all that we have to look foward to for the next 10 years? If so, then I almost say thank God for the Spice Girls!

Just seen Ming on Question Time. Knowing that he was going to be asked about it, he had to give permission early this evening for Williams to accept the position offered by Brown.

I honestly think that this week has marked the beginning of the end of the Lib Dems, always an unstable coalition. The few old SDPers who have not already done so are going home, to the party and government of a PM in what they wish had been the Labour succession: Wilson, Callaghan, Healy, Hattersley, Smith, Brown.

But almost stereotypical old Liberals like Ashdown, Lester, Garden and Carlile have also been publicly considered for office. What does that say about Ming and his party, that such offers were even being considered, never mind, at least in Ashdown's case, actually made? It says that they are finished.

Have you noticed how, every time you take your washing out of the machine, there's always one odd sock left over?

Bob said...

Indeed Tom. And one could hardly expect otherwise. After all, what has this government ever done about the socks of the nation? Indeed how could they? Which party exists to serve those needs? And can I find another vague question to conclude this post?
